Sflink is the brainchild of Alex McLintock and is aimed to be a group of people with an interest in IT and in particular an interest in doing IT work for Science Fiction and book fan organistations.

The site www.sflink.net was set up several years ago to help provide links between different science fiction organisations.

http://www.sflink.net/info is technically what is known as a Wiki. A Wiki is essentially a web site where anyone can edit and create new pages.

Gopher IT : Techie club

This is a call out to all computer techie science fiction and book fans who do the occasional piece of work for fandom - or their favourite authors. I would like to set up a loose association of IT people roughly based upon the lines of gophers at a convention.

These people volunteer their time for free in order to help out worthy fannish causes. Gophers agree to help when they have spare time and usually work in areas they are interested in (such as Green room for those who like authors, and Ops who like walky talkies) The work is unpaid except for some nominal tokens such as free food and drink. There is usually a small amount of organisation done by a gopher "mum" who helps them get to where they are most needed.

IT work however usually takes place before the event and is usually done in isolation with people learning how to do things time and time again. I want to change that so that together we can do more with less effort.

As you hopefully know I run my own box on the internet which serves a number of "fannish" websites. This is the main resource which I am bringing to the mix. Many projects are halted by the lack of a simple database backed website and the knowledge to maintain it:

also host these sites on the respective organisations behalf

What is becoming increasingly obvious is that there is far too much work to be done and, by myself, I can't look after these sites - they aren't making any money - just costing me some. I am looking for interested people to help with some of these sites on a gopher-like basis. You can get access to an internet connected web hosting box and assistence from others like yourself.

There are many projects which I am trying to do - but are being held back by lack of my time.

Please get in touch if you do any kind of IT work for the fannish community or a professional author. Contacting me wont commit you to doing anything except say you want to chat more. Initially I wont do much more than invite you to a yahoogroups mailing list - but some people don't like that. I will also be setting up a "GopherIT" area on the http://www.sflink.net/ website including a Wiki for documentation on everything. Please get in touch.
